Prof. Dr. Mahendra Pal, an internationally renowned scientist and a well known distinguished academician, obtained his B.V.Sc. & A.H., M.V.P.H., Ph.D., and D.Sc.in 1969,1975, 1981, and 1988, respectively. He has over 550 publications and authored 9 books to his credit. Prof. Pal guided over 67 students at DVM, M.V.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. level in India and Ethiopia. He is credited to develop Sunflower seed agar (Pal’s medium) medium, APRM medium, PHOL stain and Narayan stain for the study of fungi. Prof. Pal elucidated for the first time the role of Cryptococcus neoformans in the mastitis of goat and buffalo, Fusarium solani in corneal ulcer of buffalo, Aspergillus fumigatus in rhinitis of camel and mule, Trichophyton verrucosum in dermatitis of deer, Nocardia asteroides in keratitis of cattle, Aspergillus fumigatus in keratoconjunctivitis in buffalo, and Candida tropicalis in human lung empyema. He has established for the first time the prevalence of Cryptococcus neoformans in the environment of New Zealand, Nepal, and Djibouti. He has reported the first isolation of Candida albicans from mastitic milk of camel, Aspergillus fumigatus from pneumonia in poultry and Trichophyton verrucosum in dermatitis of camel in Ethiopia. Prof. Pal’s biography is published in World’s Who and Who. He has travelled to several countries such as New Zealand, Belgium, Japan and Ethiopia for delivering guest lectures and undertaken collaborative research works. Prof. Pal is a highly decorated veterinary scientist with several coveted awards, honors and recognition including “Distinguished Teacher Award”, International Achievement Award, and “Jawaharlal Nehru Award”. Recently, Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health recognized the laudable contributions of Prof. Pal in the field of Veterinary Public Health and conferred him with “Lifetime Achievement Award”. He is the First Asian to work as “Deputy Editor” of Mycoses, published from Germany. In addition, he is serving as Honorary Editor, Associate Editor, and Member of the Editorial Board of many scientific journals. Prof. Pal is the First Indian Veterinarian who worked as “JSPS Visiting Scientist” at University of Tokyo, Japan. He is serving as “Member” of Infectious Diseases working Group of EAZWA, Switzerland. Prof. Pal was instrumental in launching Ph.D. programme for the First Time in Veterinary Public Health at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He has uploaded over 375 papers at Academia and Research Gate for benefiting global Scientists. Prof. Pal was awarded “Fellow” by National Academy of Veterinary Sciences, and also honored as “Fellow” by Korean Society of Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Seoul, South Korea. Very recently, Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists has instituted an award in the name of Prof. Pal to remember his outstanding, immense, commendable and significant contributions in science. The name of award is “Prof. Mahendra Pal Zoonoses Award”, which is given annually during National Conference of Veterinary Public Health to a scientist, whose research is judged best by panel of Experts. Due to his pioneer contribution through several achievements, Prof. Pal is known as “Father of Veterinary Mycology” in India. Prof. Pal launched “Narayan Consultancy” to give free technical advice in the field of Veterinary Public Health and Mycology to the scientists of poor resource countries.
