The present investigation was designed to study the knowledge level of dairy farmers about prevention and control of mastitis, before and after training/awareness programmes and on-farm trials (OFT) during last two years viz. 2015-16 and 2016-17. A total of 120 farmers from 10 villages which were identified by Government of Karnataka were selected from the district for this study. An OFT involving project beneficiaries was conducted to reduce the incidence of sub-clinical mastitis in dairy cattle. The study reported that there was reduction in the occurrence of mastitis cases both in cows and buffaloes after imparting knowledge and skills on the mastitis detection and control techniques. The keeping quality of milk has also improved in both cow milk and buffalo milk. There was one lakh reduction in the somatic cell count of cows and buffaloes milk by the adoption of the practices. As a whole, this study has highlighted the effort of multidisciplinary team in prevention and control of SCM at field conditions and further, recommends that field problems have to be solved by participatory technology generation and transfer approach.
