Very few field studies on the spontaneous occurrence of paratuberculosis in Gaddi goats have been carried out in India. The aim of the present study was to know the sero-prevalence of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infection among Gaddi goats of Himachal Pradesh (HP) using indirect ELISA and AGID. A total of 68 serum samples were collected randomly from goats belonging to different age groups slaughtered at local slaughter places in district Kangra and from Govt. slaughterhouse Shimla, during September, 2013 to March, 2014 and screened for the presence of antibodies against MAP antigen. Association between two serological tests was statistically analyzed by employing chi-square and kappa statistics. Forty-four (64.7%) and 29 (42.64%) goats out of 68 were found positive to MAP antibodies by ELISA and AGID respectively, and correlation between two tests was found statistically significant. Prevalence was relatively higher using ELISA as compare to AGID. This is the first report of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis sero-prevalence in Gaddi goats in HP.
