Structure and Functioning of Livestock Based Women Self Help Groups in Ranchi District of Jharkhand

The present paper is a descriptive study of the structure and functioning of livestock based Women Self Help Groups (WSHGs) in Ranchi district of Jharkhand. A total of 12 randomly selected WSHGs and their members (140 in numbers) from purposively selected 3 blocks viz. Angara, Kanke and Ormanjhi of Ranchi district comprised the sample of the study. Data were collected through structured interview schedule. The study revealed that 83.33 per cent of the groups were medium sized comprising of 10-15 members and all were homogenous in terms of social and financial background of their members. Three-fourth of the WSHGs were holding weekly meetings and all were collecting a fixed thrift amount. A great majority of them were fully utilizing their accumulated savings for giving loans to their members at an interest rate of less than 3.00 per cent and had high rate of loan recoveries. Most of the members had borrowed loans for one or more times and had utilized it for purchasing of animals and treatment of sick family members. All the groups had passed the first grading and had received revolving fund for rotation among members to meet small credit requirements. Half of the WSHGs had selected pig rearing, one-third goat rearing and remaining 16.67 per cent had selected cattle rearing as Income Generating Activity (IGA). Although, education level of the members of the groups were low but they were regular in maintaining records and accounts.
