Study on Efficacy of Diatomaceous Earth to Ameliorate Aflatoxin Induced Patho-Morphological Changes in Liver and Intestines of Broiler Chicken

The ability of Diatomaceous earth (DAE) in reducing the detrimental effects of aflatoxin (AF) in broiler diet was evaluated. DAE was supplemented @ 2000 mg Kg-1 of feed along with 0.5 and 1 ppm of AF Kg-1 of feed. A total of 240 healthy day old broiler chicks were divided into 6 groups comprising of control and treatment groups. Feeding of AF resulted in prominent gross lesions characterised by enlargement, yellowish discoloration, friable texture, varying degree of congestion observed in liver. Histopathologically, liver revealed congestion, varying degree of cellular swelling and fatty changes, degeneration and necrosis of hepatocytes, periportal and perivascular infiltration of inflammatory cells and connective tissue proliferation. The addition of DAE to aflatoxin mixed feed revealed significant improvement marked by decreased severity of lesions in the visceral organs. The macroscopic and microscopic changes in the birds fed with DAE in combination with aflatoxin included those that were observed in aflatoxin alone fed birds, but in reduced magnitude and severity. The study concluded that 2% DAE in feed can be effectively used to reduce the histotoxic effects of aflatoxin in broiler chicken.
