In a clinical trial conducted at different dairy farms, cases of clinical mastitis in cows with high frequency of antibiotic resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas areuginosa was recorded before treatment. Subsequently six cows not responding to antibiotic therapy were given treatment with phage cocktail (3x1012 PFU/ml) by intramammary infusion in each affected teat. Follow up of each case was done at regular intervals (0, 5 and 10 days). Four animals showed complete recovery (66.66%) adjudged on the basis of arbitrary scale set for qualitative assessment of recovery from mastitis. In remaining two animals, yeast was predominant causal agent besides other mastitic pathogens tested. It could be concluded from present finding that, the phage cocktail efficiently reduced carrier load of udder bacteria, revealing its potential as an effective approach to prophylaxis or treatment of mastitis in dairy cows.
