Organic livestock farming in India, a practice deeply embedded in the nation's cultural heritage merging traditional nature-centric animal husbandry embodies principles of natural living, sustainability, and animal welfare, eschewing synthetic inputs for organic feed and natural remedies. Historically, Indian livestock rearing was inherently organic, integrating animals for nutrient cycling, a tradition dating back to the Vedic period. However, colonial influences and the green revolution led to a shift towards chemical-intensive and commercial farming. A major Change in organic farming occurred in late 20th century, supported by the government policy intervention such as the launch of national programme for organic production (NPOP) in 2000 and the paramparagat krishi vikas yojna (PKVY) in 2015. India now leads globally in organic producers, yet its organic livestock sector lags behind crop farming. There is immense potential exists due to hardy indigenous breeds and using low-input methods by the small-scale farmers. This sector offers significant opportunities including rising consumer demand, environmental benefits, improved animal health, and higher nutritional quality in products and can be further boosted by adaptation of technologies like Precision Livestock Farming. However, challenges always persist such as limited farmer awareness, high input costs, complex certification, and low domestic demand. Apart from this, disease management without synthetic chemicals, organic feed shortages, insufficient policy support, research, and extension services are also significant hurdles. Overcoming these requires increased awareness, financial aid, simplified certification, stronger supply chains, and targeted policies to foster a sustainable and profitable organic livestock sector.
