Abstract

Cultured meat, an emerging alternative to traditional animal protein, is at a nascent stage in India but holds significant potential as a disruptive technology for entrepreneurship. Despite its promise, limited market data poses challenges for potential entrepreneurs. To address this gap, a survey was conducted to analyze demographic patterns and perform a SWOT analysis based on participant responses, providing baseline insights for future business ventures in this domain. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using percentage methods. The findings revealed unanimous agreement among respondents that key strengths of cultured meat technology include its cutting-edge nature, close resemblance to conventional meat, sustainability, ethical and slaughter-free production, adaptability to diverse culinary preferences, steady raw material supply, health and safety benefits, and long-term market viability. Identified weaknesses included skepticism toward lab-grown products, high production costs, uncertainty in regulatory approvals, difficulty replicating traditional meats sensory qualities, potential market saturation, limited research, scaling challenges, and the resource-intensive process of educating consumers. Opportunities recognized by all participants included meeting ethical and environmental demands through reduced greenhouse gas emissions, land, and water use, fostering collaborations across the food sector, attracting conscious consumers, penetrating new markets, leveraging rising demand for protein, and securing growing investments from government and private sectors. Threats noted involved intense market competition, public misconceptions, regulatory and compliance hurdles, risks of negative media coverage, and inadequate supply of essential cell culture inputs. This study provides crucial baseline data for establishing cultured meat start-ups in India.
