The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of anemia in buffaloes and to explore the
probable etiology. Out of 1096 buffaloes of different age and sex reared under different managemental
practices in Krishna district, 116 (10.58 %) animals were anemic. The prevalence of anemia was higher in
buffalo calves (18.08%) followed by prepubertal heifers (16.25%) aged between 1-3 years and less in adult
buffaloes ( 9.33%). Mineral deficiency and parasites were the major causes of anaemia in the present study.
Mineral deficiency contributed to anemia in 72.41 per cent of the anemic buffaloes while parasitic etiology
was recorded in 49.13% buffaloes.
