Green Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles by Azadirachta indica Leaf Extract and Coating with Morinda citrifolia Fruit Extract: Their Characterization

Production of nontoxic and safe nanoparticles is an utmost priority in the recent era of nanotechnology as these nanoparticles are continuously in contact with biological environment. Therefore in the present investigation, gold nanoparticles were synthesized by biological reduction (green synthesis) of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4.3H2O) with Azadirachta indica (neem) 5% leaf extract. The average diameter of nanoparticles formed was found to be 40 – 45 nm by characterization with TEM images and particle size analysis by DLS method. The crystallinity of these GNPs were checked by XRD which match with the standard and surface charge was measured by zeta potential and found to be – 10.6 mV. These nanoparticles were coated with Morinda citrifolia fruit extract, which was measured for zeta potential and found to be – 14.6 mV. FTIR analysis conducted to identify reducing and capping agent and found that phenol and protein portion in the plant extract play important part in GNPs formation and stabilization. The average size of coated nanoparticles was found to be within 50 – 60 nm by TEM analysis and particle size analysis by DLS method. Most of the GNPs and coated GNPs were spherical in appearance confirmed by SEM analysis. This study concluded that Azadirachta indica (neem) leaf extract can be used as a source for gold nanoparticle synthesis by biological method and Morinda citrifolia fruit extract can be useful as a coating agent upon metal nanoparticles.
